Some Thoughts

The sun rises ever higher in the sky. The earth warms up and the snow melts. The rebirth begins anew this year. A cleansing breeze wafts through. The cool, refreshing touch caresses our skin in a kind reminder that the old chill still remains. A song comes on the iPod. Don't Hold Your Breath. A song that talks of not returning to where one used to be. To be reborn, stronger than they had been. To begin as the earth does every year, anew.

The truth is, we all go through phases of change and reformation. Some find religion, others find true love. Still others live through so much strife and conflict throughout their lives that they simply can't think of living as they were raised. So they change and become immensely stronger than they were.

It is these people that make a difference. These are the people that speak out against wrongs. These are the people that see unjust actions and work to correct them. These are the people that stand up for equal rights. The people that don't take lethargy as an excuse. The people that will make a wrong known. These people inspire change in their lives, communities, and even nations.

It is this group of people that I am inspired by. So I will support those that fight for the rights of people too scared to fight. Too afraid of what society will do to them. I'll stand up and fight for their rights though I may be beat up in the process. I'll stand up for the people that stand up, speak out, and create change.

I am thrilled to write that I am in talks with the OutNorth Theater up here in Anchorage, Alaska to screen our film during Pride week in Alaska. I also may screen it during the Pride Festival. I will keep you posted!

I have been doing well these days. I am in the Air Force, and currently stationed in New Mexico. I move to Alaska for the next three years in April! It has been an experience. I have shown several people our documentary and they are impressed!

Hey you all,

I was just looking through old photos and realized I never sent these pics from our Christmas gift adventure. You guys were the best for helping to get all of these presents wrapped and labeled -- I got a really beautiful thank you note from the Children's Hospital saying HOW happy the parents were to see these gifts for their kids -- she said many of them started crying when they saw the gifts.

We talked about getting together to hang out this Thursday night while Aris is home from college. I say we meet at Mojo on the Cap (600 N. High St.) for happy hour $5 food specials. Does 7:30 pm till 9ish work for you guys (happy hour ends at 8 pm)? I will be coming from swim practice and may not be there till 7:45 pm.

I am working with the Center for Digital Storytelling in Berkeley, CA to run a youth media workshop in April that is going to be AWESOME!! They will be facilitating an exciting, FREE
workshop for youth in Columbus in April and we would love to have you apply. (If you do apply, let me know so I can give them a heads up!) -- and if you are over 22, let me know and I might be able to slip you in.

WHAT: Stories from My Future Digital Storytelling Workshop
WHEN: Friday-Sunday April 11-13
WHERE: Ohio State University's Digital Union
WHO: Youth ages 15-22
COST: Free!

All young people who successfully complete the 3 day workshop will receive a
FREE iPod Nano loaded with the media created during the workshop.

During the workshop, young people will work with Photoshop, Comic Life, and
Final Cut Express to create multimedia stories. To see examples of stories
created in past workshops, please visit:

The workshop is a collaboration between the Center for Digital Storytelling,
Knowledge Works, and the Institute for the Future. Facilitators will lead

would very much appreciate your help in spreading the word. Below please

we had a *really* good screening with 120 9th and 10th graders at ACPA on Thursday. Thanks so much to Lauren for having us! They have invited us to screen for all of the juniors and seniors this spring.

This is also a reminder about our sunday screening at First Unitarian Church. Screening starts at 2 pm, please be there by 1:45 pm. I am counting on Denise, Wayne and Paul. Still need to hear confirmation from Angelo and Sarah. Here are all the deets, call me if you need more info.

ok, so i just heard from lauren that there will be *120* 9th and 10th graders at the screening Thursday morning. And as of today, it's just me and Paul going. If ANY of you can rally yourselves to get there from 10:20-11:40 am, or even from 11-11:40 am, that would be super sweet. please let me know.

scorpion bite

thank you very, very much to everyone who was there last night and helped me get off to the Emergency Room safely. after lots of poking and prodding, they numbed me up, gave me an incision and did some testing. i am happy to say no spiders or scorpions were found inside my leg. seems to be some kind of infection. i have been issued drugs and am still sore and a little wobbly, but mostly better.

you guys are the best. the 5 big hugs i got before i left were greatly appreciated.

Don't forget the OHIO ADVOCATES FOR MENTAL HEALTH SCREENING on Friday August 17. This is a really important screening with 500 viewers who are responsible for providing mental health care for ALL Ohioans. This is a *very* important screening (plus free dinner, fun carpooling and you will each make at least $50). We leave Columbus around 3 pm on Friday.

Most people in Ohio do NOT believe discrimination is right. They do however, need help making the connections to see the discrimination GLBT folks face, and the ways it hurts.

Scary/Funny Dream

Hi everyone...I had this really weird dream last night. I'll try to make it short and to the point because I tend to drag (hehe...you'll get this later...) on a story...

Basically, I was at my house and if you were looking out from my front porch, to the left was the ocean. I was inside though, wearing baggy jeans with pockets full of amo. I had guns because people were attacking my house and I guess I lived alone. So anyway, I had all these guns and bullets and I kept killing the bad guys. I had a moment to look out the window when I saw an "old woman" break into my house. I ran and hid behind the open door in my mom's office, my room, and waited for my attacker. The "old woman" (I've always had this weird fear of old woman robbing me.) came into the room and suddenly all of my guns were gone and all I had was a long metal rod. Now my dream was sort of a comedy. I started beating the "old woman" in the face with my long metal rod and then I was like, "OMG Wayne!? Is that you?!" To which the old woman replied, "Hi Denise! I was playing a trick on you." The "old woman" was Wayne dressed in disguise!! It was so scary but funny and weird. I just had to share it with you all. :)

We just got asked to do a corporate diversity training for Lucent Technologies, an international software company with offices in Columbus. Angie, from Kscope set up the screening (yahoo angie) next Monday June 25th from 11:30 - 1 pm. This is a GREAT opportunity for us to make a difference for gay people everywhere. Hope you're all doing well. Thanks again for your hard work on the press kit -- we're getting there! I uploaded our DVDs to kunaki.com (thanks to paul) this week for cheap and easy duplication. I also reedited and ordered 5000 new postcards for the press kits and for our upcoming screenings and festivals. I have been updating the website and getting press releases out and hope to have the trailer edited by tomorrow.

In the meantime, congrats to our upcoming GRADS: Denise and Aris. You guys rock. Hope the rest of you are looking forward to summer vacation too!

So today Julie and I were invited by Cathe Kobacker, a YVO supporter and fan, to attend the Women of Achievement Lunch, which celebrates the contributions of women in Columbus who are deeply committed to fighting sexism and racism. It was a powerful and inspiring event and I wish you could have all been there.

As we were leaving we saw Mayor Coleman and I just happened to have the DVD and a card in my bag, so I gave him one and told him it was made by students from Columbus and we appreciate his support of our community. He shook my hand hard and said, "I appreciate *your* commitment."

Go MAYOR!!

Now, how do you guys think we should follow up on this??

We talked about North Carolina. What we learned, what we heard, and how to move on. We are moving into our next phase. Our initial phase of planning and development is over. We are on the threshold of pushing this project onwards to the international market. We are developing committees to handle this workload and diversify results.

Hey Folks,

I'm back from Canada and excited to give you this report about the screening of 20 Straws at the OutRights Conference.

Here goes:

There were about 30 people at the presentation, I presented as part of a workshop called Creating Social Change through the Arts. Most of the people in the workshop were over 30, though there were several younger folks, two of whom were tranny.

One of the people who was really moved by your video was a 22 year old gender refugee from Nicaragua. He has been in Canada for two years and is facing deportation. He is fighting for refugee status based on the persecution he will face in Nicaragua for being gay. If this doesn't give you an indication of how far and wide your work can reach, nothing will.

There was a loud applause after the screening of the video, followed by a Q&A. I was very honored to be an Ambassador for YVO, maybe we can put that on the back of my t-shirt (as per Liv's suggestion!). The comments went like this:

Praise for the fact that it did not feel "totally American." In other words, people felt like the stories were universal, something anyone who is dealing with sexuality could relate to.

More praise for the fact that the video presented some of the positive outcomes of being young, gay and out. The woman who made those comments said she gets tired of seeing such a focus on the negative and that is was refreshing to see you all so happy and well adjusted even though it is clear you have had to deal with such homophobia.

People were curious to know what impact the creation of the video had on your lives. I hope I am not overstepping here, but I told them that overall, YVO participants now seemed more confident, and eager to be a part of creating change.

On another note, I sold 2 t-shirts and 9 DVDs. AND, I put a DVD in the hand of Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard. She has started a foundation in remembrance of her son and they have a large youth focus, so I thought she should have a copy. She gave a very moving presentation about the urgent need for people to accept diversity on all levels and to join in the fight to change the repressive Bush regime. I wish you could have heard her talk, she is one powerful woman. She had some especially interesting perspectives on the ways religion is misued to justify the oppression of GLBT people.

OK, that's the skinny. You all were missed and there was much buzz about the video and it's powerful impact. Another reason to be proud.

Good Morning, Julia,

First i will apologize for going through you as an imtermediary to Liv, but I dont find her adress in my address book, so I hope you won't mind passing on this request.

I've accepted the task for GLISA NA's Newsletter to identify instances of positive, unique, and interesting initiatives and people who might be a good basis for a "GLBT Profile" in the Newsletter. Our first such profile will be of Dan Vaudrin, President of Equipe Montreal, and very active member of the Montreal GLBT community.

For the subsequent newsletter, I was wondering if Liv and the excellent young people she has been working with would be interested in being profiled. Not only did I find their presentation in Montreal one of the most stunning, but I thought a presence for them now might engage them to be evident at the 2nd Continental OutGames in Philadelphia.

The profiles are not long, a few hundred words, hopefully with some pictures and certainly reference to their website. The due date isn't for a few weeks yet, but I thought I'd ask now in case there are permissions and approvals and that sort of thing that might be required.

Ok, so we are premiering at the Wexner Center on Thursday March 1st and we meed to have our title in to the Wexner Center by (ehem) tomorrow. We brainstormed a BUNCH of titles this weekend and we all really like

20 Straws

This alludes to the idea that whether you end up gay is kind of like drawing straws, you never really know what you'll get. The number 20 is the average age of everyone in the group, and also refers to 20 questions -- and trying to figure something out.

We DO think we need a subtitle, to clarify what it's actually about. So everyone needs to post 2 title suggestions by tomorrow (Monday) at 7 pm. We will decide our final title at tomorrow's meeting.

Really, you guys blow my mind. Everything I've read and everything I've seen stuns me and no one believes I KNOW you guys!
To play catch-up on my life, I guess we'll pick up from this summer, when I last saw many of you.

I moved to a new apartment at the end of the summer, with two new roommates and no Lisa. (To answer questions, yes, Lisa and I are together and it's a shaky situation.) I'm working at DeVry as one of the IT geeks, though 10 hours a day working and studying in the same place can cause a nasty case of cabin fever.

At varying points in the summer, I managed to lose my jump drive, my iPod shuffle (no, I'll NEVER pay for one of those..), my two memory cards for my camera, and a job. So those edited movies I had ready to send, more footage and scenes I had for cutting, and music I wanted to use: gone. And money to replace things? Hahaha... And to top that sundae, my old laptop ceased to operate (literally), and the debacle of getting a new -working- laptop lasted much longer than I could have predicted or foretold on any given "Edgar Allen Poe" type day.
Anyway, I'm back on a more even keel now.

I was home for Thanksgiving weekend, and Lisa came with, which was tons of fun. Angelo came to Thanksgiving dinner with my family, and to say they loved him would be putting it lightly. We narrowly avoided a bad situation, and had Grandpa McGinnis been in the state, problems could not have been avoided. Let me explain... Grandpa is a self-righteous, horribly prejudiced, opinionated, crotchety old Irish Catholic with a penchant for conflict. I am the tattooed, pierced, gender-bending, queer Granddaughter (to whom he still frequently inquires about boyfriends). My best friend is a gay, black Christian guy working with "those Jew kids." My girlfriend is a pilates instructing, cage-dancing Jew from Boston. My father (if you want to call him that) is an unkempt liberal, a protestor (you've probably seen him on corners of High St. with anti-Bush signs), and a pot-head.
But.. we dodged that bullet since he stayed in Florida, and my family seemed to accept/not notice that Lisa and I are a couple, and dinner was uneventful in that capacity. For more details, ask Angelo!

I did get to tell my mom during this visit that Lisa and I are dating, and it was received with an "Mmkay.. I kinda figured. I don't know why you're reluctant to tell me about things anyway.." to which I had to explain the less than kind reception of said news by another parental unit.

As for Christmas vacation, we're arriving on the morning of the 22nd, and Lisa will be leaving for Boston on Christmas day (I think.. I should check on that) and I may or may not be going to Boston after Christmas day (still working out details). I don't think I'll be in town on a Thursday :-( A garage band track for each of us? How indie of us! I caught that there's nothing concocted for me thusfar, but I'm fan-service excited to hear what you guys come up with. Michelle also jumped on the chance to remind me to update my bio, so now that I've a working machine in front of me and a job with nothing for me to do most of the time, I can cook up something new.

Gay men's chorus (FREE!!!)

The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus is offering free tickets to their upcoming
concert to Kaleidoscope youth and student members of area GSAs. Please

Joy! is a celebration of the holiday season and an excellent way to kick
off a season of wonderment and good will.

The Chorus will perform specially-arranged versions of Christmas classics
while embracing holiday carols from different cultures. Pieces will range
from gospel and swing to traditional carols from around the world. The
chorus is proud to present John Rutter's "Gloria" arranged for male voices
by CGMC assistant artistic director Tim Sarsany.

Free tickets for GSA members are available for the Thursday, November 30
performance at 8pm and the Saturday, December 2 matinee at 2pm. Both

hey -

i may have been a bit overzealous, but i've been working on music in garage band a bit over the past 24 hours. i couldn't figure out exactly how to start, so i basically created a song/track for each of you with garage band and then exported it into itunes. i've done 7 out of the 8 of you - haven't gotten to andrea yet (and unsure about paul) - we may want to talk more about it.

i'd like to get feedback on and make changes and adjustments if we think there's anything worth keeping from the tracks. i'll try to burn a few cds.

Just wanted to send out a reminder about the GSA Summit/ Discussion Group that is going on at KYC. Here is a little more information:

For those of you who have EVER been to the Center before, we have a great opportunity for you. On Nov. 4 & 5 we will be hosting some discussion groups on why it's important to have gay friendly places for people under 21 to go. You will get a $20 gift card to either the movies or i-tunes, whichever you want. Lunch will be catered--free to you--and there will be lots of lively chats. Okay, so I was all pumped for our meeting at the new K-scope until yesterday when my mom says she can't take me now because she has to work. My step-dad can't take me either because he's got some thing to do. (They don't really tell me things).

For the first year my high school is allowing seniors to get out of school a month early if we do some kind of shadowing thing. I was thinking about shadowing my elementary school guidance counselor (I'm thinking of going into early childhood psych) but was trying to think of something else as an alternative.

I figure you all know me pretty well, so I figured you might be able to help. Any ideas on something that might be fun for me? I was trying to think of like, once in a lifetime chances, but I couldnt think of any. :-p

Our final meeting of the summer will be a party / slideshow / pizza-eating-fest at my house this Thursday night at 7:30. Hope you can all come!! Bring your photos and an appetite and we'll celebrate a long, strong year of YVO and an amazing showing at the Human Rights Conference last week!
